The question
Who benefits from vitamin D3, and what did large trials find in healthy adults?
Study design
VITAL vitamin D arm: 25,871 adults, 2,000 IU/day vs placebo, median 5.3 years. NIH ODS fact sheet for intake guidance. [1][2]
What they found
Vitamin D supports calcium absorption and bone health. Many adults run low, especially with little sun exposure or darker skin. In VITAL, supplementation did not lower the primary endpoints in a largely replete population. [1][2]
Limitations
Benefit likely depends on starting levels. A blood test is the best way to know yours.
What this does not mean
More is not better. Stay within the label and the NIH upper limit unless your clinician advises otherwise.
